Free Ronald Fortner Coroner of Lumpkin Co. who was convicted of violation of oath of office and theft by deception. His promise was to always speak for the most vulnerable in out society. The very young and the elderly. He was convicted of investigating deaths at our local nursing home after family members came to him saying they thought their loved ones were being neglected. Our office did a total of 18 investigations at 175.00 per call, which is the standard pay for coroner in GA. It was a total of slightly over $3000. He was sentenced to 15 years with 3 to serve and to pay all court costs. All because he cared!
Many people wonder why it was not turned over to local law enforcement for investigation? I'll tell you. A dead body is the jurisdiction of the coroner's office. Law enforcement is in charge of the scene. They can not go near body until coroner has done their investigation. That is what his office was doing. Investigating possible questionable deaths.
