Feminine hygiene products should be viewed as a necessity, not a luxury item. In 2016, New York City passed a law that requires public schools to provide free pads & tampons in school buildings from 6th to 12th grade. Many schools & universities across our country have already successfully implemented the initiative of free feminine hygiene products on their campus', such as Harvard, Brown, Colorado State, Arizona State, and many more. Even within North Carolina, UNC Chapel Hill, NC State, and Appalachian State have already taken this step - so why haven't we?

When individuals unexpectedly get their period, it can easily interfere with their classes and schoolwork, forcing them to leave class & return to their dorm/ home to find products if they do not have any with them. Although they are available for purchase in some campus shops, many individuals cannot afford the more-expensive smaller-packs of feminine hygiene products that are offered. We can easily find free condoms on campus - so if the university cares about students' sexual protective rights, why do they not take the step to care about students' monthly menstrual cycles? One is a choice to participate in, and one is not.

This is a bipartisan issue, affecting women of all backgrounds, beliefs, and studies. Support a more inclusive campus for all, a campus where an individual will never be forced to leave class because of a period again. Support Free Feminine Hygiene Products on UNC-Wilmington's campus.

We, the undersigned, call on the University of North Carolina Wilmington to create a more inclusive & accommodating campus by providing menstrual hygiene products free of charge in women's and gender-neutral bathrooms.
