The Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) applies provincial liquor mark-ups to all products it sells at its retail locations. For wine these mark-ups range from 65% to over 70% of the wholesale price.
This mark-up is essentially a tax - much like HST, but it is buried in the bottle price the consumer sees on the shelf.
It should be noted this mark-up does not include any profit margin for the supplier or its licensed representatives.
We, the undersigned, call on the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to exclude the Provincial Liquor Mark-Up from the published (LCBO shelf) price of wine.
We believe the Government of Ontario should operate its businesses with complete transparency - and so end the practice of burying a 65%+ mark-up in the price of a bottle of wine that Ontario consumers see on LCBO store shelves.
The mark-up should be applied alongside the HST upon purchase by consumers.
