We are a group living in the midst of a 1,000 plus Flying Fox colony. The living conditions for the residents as well as the nursing home residents are intolerable.
Recent evidence suggests that these living conditions can expose us to many different and often fatal zoonotic diseases.
We have prepared a submission for Government and want to show support within the community by using this petition.
The Federal and State Governments are given a mandate, by the citizens of Australia, to make decisions which benefit the Australian community at large.
Flying Foxes are a proven reservoir for several communicable and fatal diseases.
We believe the threat of Hendra virus moving into the human population is a real and present danger.
We call on State and Federal Governments to exercise their ‘duty of care’ and to safeguard the health and well-being of Australian citizens by moving Flying Fox colonies out of the urban environment.
We also ask that flying fox colonies be maintained in an area, away from the human population, dedicated to the conservation of the species.
