Under the EFDRE Constitution of occupational health and safety act, all foreign employers have a general duty to provide a safe workplace for employees, free from recognised hazards that causes or likely to cause death or serious harm to employees.
In addition all foreign companies are expected to promote ethical business practice. However for some foreign companies working in Ethiopia the following local employment conditions are altered, and an intimidating work environment is created.
1. Some actual acts of violence such as hitting and other form of physical abuse, as well as threats of violence, have been reported.
2. Many companies and its employees have engaged themselves in illegal acts like tax evasion, money laundering and black market activities.
3. It is sad to note that some companies have offered extremely low wages to the local working population. It's hard to set a self negotiated wage where people are ready and willing to do any available work.
This petition is organised by some Ethiopians working in foreign companies to urge our government:
1. To fulfil their responsibility of protecting its citizens as well as defending their human rights.
2. To control foreign companies' illegal activities and
3. To set fair minimum wage scales for foreign employers.
