The Guilford Commissioners changed the way they distribute sales tax distributions back in 2003. As a result, the smaller towns get little if any of their fair share of sales tax money collected by the state and returned to the county, which used to distribute the money on a per capita basis. They changed the method to Ad Valorem, so that they now get over $15 Million which should go to the smaller towns, which already pay, per capita, a much larger property tax rate than the county average.

We, the citizens of Guilford County, especially the residents of affected small towns, request the Guilford County Commissioners to change the method of distribution of sales taxes back to Per-capita. The Ad Valorem method, which your board changed to in 2003 deprives those living in smaller towns their fair share of the sales tax distribution which they pay in. We do not believe we should have to be over-taxed by our municipalities in order to get the portion of distributions our towns deserve and need. These funds are needed in order to better provide the services which the county does not provide.
