Every child should have access to Universal Pre-K regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Please sign our petition to show your support for Universal Pre-K in South San Francisco and so we can grow our movement to expand similar models to other cities!
South City’s existing public preschool program for children aged 2.5 to 5 years old is so popular that it has a four-year waitlist—with 700+ families! Parents and caregivers who don’t win a spot in this affordable program end up paying more than $20,000/year per child just so they can go to work, assuming they can find a provider with space for their child. And many families can’t afford ECE at all—meaning their young children don’t receive the preparation they need to thrive in kindergarten and beyond.
Our proposed ballot initiative will expand provider capacity and raise wages for ECE workers so no child will be turned away, and we will fully fund these programs so every parent and caregiver is empowered to choose the program that works best for their family.
Quality Pre-K is a crucial part of giving children the best start in life, promoting equity in our communities, and has been proven to have societal benefits including increased school performance, higher graduation rates, lower teen pregnancy rates, and lower incarceration rates.
The South San Francisco Universal Preschool campaign is a coalition of parents, childcare providers, teachers, community groups, along with South San Francisco Councilmember James Coleman who are running a grassroots campaign to get Universal Pre-K on the ballot in November so all families who live and work in South City have access to free, high quality preschool for their children.
The groundbreaking measure will tax only the biggest corporations in South City to provide free preschool and childcare for children aged 2.5 to 5 years old and pay teachers and childcare workers a living wage.
