Supermarkets often start out with humble beginnings, but mainly due to lack of effective restrictive planning legislation, we are now staring at the reality of a Manchester School of Management study that predicted if supermarket expansion continues at the current rate we could have no independent stores by 2050 in the U.K..
Supermarkets(especially Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, and Morrisons) spent huge amounts on how and why they are better or greener than their competitors, but supermarkets in a time and age when natural resources are increasingly scarse and workers the world over are struggling to survive, are guilty of
price-flexing(marking up the price of goods in smaller stores or other regions of the country),
loss-leading(selling on goods at prices less than cost them to buy from suppliers)
unnecessary waste(from manufacturers' waste further down the chain, to cosmetic waste, to not supporting fareshare charities to redistribute still edible post sell-by date food)
not giving farmers and suppliers fair wage(except in rare fair-trade cases)
excess pesticider use(depleting the fertility of our worlds' soil)
excess packaging(over use of plastics) and
excessive transportation, the last three points all relating to over use of oil/oil-derivatives.
Local independent stores are being lost at an alarming rate and with it the speciality care, character and diversity of our communities is being lost for ever. Welcome to Clone Town U.K. and Ghost Town U.K. (see New Economics Foundation reports)

We, the undersigned call on Eric Pickles and the U.K. coalition government to introduce U.K.-wide, thorough and effective legislation to give local councils greater powers to limit supermarket expansion in number and size immediately.
Many towns and cities have cumulative impact areas, within which the venues that can sell alcohol is effectively limited.
Alcohol can be enjoyed responsibly, yet supermarket expansion means necessarily unfair trading practices continue, the poor get poorer while the rich get richer, and our communities suffer as indepent local shops are lost and supermarkets' own huge profits soar with little benefits felt by communities themselves.
Humans can recover from alcohol abuse but our communities can never recover from the damage of continued unchecked supermarket expansion.
Please act now to limit supermarket expansion in size and number throughout the U.K.
