Recently a young man Nikolas James Posa Delegat 19 was sentenced to 300 hours community service and fined $5000 for beating a female Police Officer in the course of her duties and continued to do so while she was unconscious. She was off work for more than two months and is still having trouble today as the result of the cowardly assault. His parents are rich and upstanding in the community. (source NZ Herald)

Jackie Maikuku received a nine-month jail sentence for attacking an officer who tried to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. He removed an officer's taser before assaulting him badly enough to give him cuts and bruises. (source Newshub)

These cases are very similar with the main difference being social standing and skin colour.

The Judge in the first case thinks that 300 hours community service and $5000 to the Police Officer is justice. If the perpetrator had of been a normal middle, working class or lower class person, serious jail time would have been imposed. I believe it's time for a serious shake up to stop Judges imposing inconsistent sentences.

We the undersigned call on Amy Adams Justice Minister to:

1) review the current sentencing laws to ensure that there is consistent sentencing across the board no matter what social standing or race the offender has.

2) review the current sentencing laws to ensure that there are minimum sentences to be imposed in cases such as the Jackie Maikuku and Nikolas James Posa Delegat that are meaningful and fit the offence.

3 review the current sentencing laws to ensure that when a Police Officer is assaulted it carries a minimum imprisonment term.
