Most skiers and snowboarders care about mountain environments, but have no way of knowing whether their local or favorite hills are doing everything possible to ensure that the environment is protected from the potential damage that can be caused by ski hill operations.
Environmental management plans help ski hills implement sustainable strategies for water, energy, and ecosystem conservation. We encourage ski area operators to match or exceed standards set by industry leaders in ecological sustainability.
Common environmental impacts arising from ski hill development that can be managed with mitigation measures are: erosion from ski run preparation (slashing, tree removal) and from artificial snowmaking increasing water run-off, pollution of aquatic ecosystems from parking lot run-off, encroachment of invasive species, interference with wildlife corridors, etc.
We, the undersigned, call on all ski areas to develop environmental management plans that will support the ecological integrity of mountain ecosystems.
