The family is the fundamental unit of society.

Parents are responsible for the primary education of their children and enlist other individuals and institutions, such as schools, to assist in that critical role.

The Members of Alberta’s Legislature are currently considering enshrining parental rights in the Alberta Human Rights Act.

Bill 44 includes a proposal that the Government of Alberta enshrine in Alberta Human Rights Legislation the right of parents to be notified when school curriculum or materials include the explicit teaching of religion, sexuality or sexual orientation, as well as the right of parents to opt their children out of participation in such curriculum or materials without academic penalty to the child.

The bill passed second reading on May 13, 2009, and is currently being debated prior to final vote at third reading. It is expected that the bill will be voted on the first week of June.

It is critical that parental rights be enshrined as a fundamental human right to uphold the family as the fundamental unit of society.

We, the undersigned, urge the Government of Alberta to follow through with its proposal to enshrine in Alberta’s Human Rights Legislation the right of parents to be notified when school curriculum or materials include the explicit teaching of religion, sexuality or sexual orientation, as well as the right of parents to opt their children out of participation in such curriculum or materials without academic penalty to the child.
