WHEREAS, Communities throughout the United States of America have successfully established Ordinances, Regulations, and/or Laws prohibiting the sale of commercially bred (“Puppy Mill”) dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores, retail businesses or other commercial establishments in their communities; and

WHEREAS, the sale of commercially bred (“Puppy Mill”) dogs, cats and rabbits contributes to the proliferation of homeless or unwanted animals that end up in our community’s Animal Control Shelter; and

WHEREAS, prohibiting the sale of commercially bred (“Puppy Mill”) dogs, cats and rabbits in pet stores, retail businesses or other commercial establishments may lower our community’s Animal Control Shelter euthanasia rate and lead to a greater adoption rate of our shelter’s animals;

We the undersigned:

1) Are against the sale of any commercially bred (“Puppy Mill”) dogs, cats and rabbits in our community;

2) Support an Ordinance, Regulation, and/or Law within our community making it “unlawful for any person to sell any live dog, cat or rabbit in any pet store, retail business or other commercial establishment located in the City of Bloomington, County of Monroe, Indiana, unless the dog, cat or rabbit was obtained from the animal control shelter located within the City, or a registered Humane
Society, humane organization, or non-profit rescue.”; and

3) Call upon the Mayor and City Council of the City of Bloomington, Indiana; and the Monroe County Council to create and pass such an Ordinance, Regulation, and/or Law at its earliest opportunity.
