The Suffolk County Red Light Safety Program was enacted in 2009. Since 2009, this program has become a major source of revenue for the Suffolk County Government. This revenue stream has been at the expense of the residents and taxpayers of Suffolk County. Through the end of 2014 this program has generated a total of $32,889,776 for the Suffolk County Government, with $27,528,405 coming in 2014 alone. The 2015 report has not been made public, but the writing is on the wall.

The initial program called for cameras at no more than 50 intersections in Suffolk County. This was increased to 100 intersections in 2013 and as of 2014 there were 104 intersections monitored by these cameras.

The maximum allowable fine in the initial legislation was $50. In 2014, Suffolk County also imposed a $30 processing fee to go along with the $50 fine. This raised the total to $80 per offense.

It is clear that Suffolk County Legislative Body has little or no regard for the inalienable rights guaranteed to the residents whom it is paid to be governing. It is time to end the Red Light Safety Program Now!

We, the residents of Suffolk County, New York, wish to end the current Suffolk County Red Light Safety Program Now.

We feel that this current program does not serve the sole purpose of creating a safer driving environment for all drivers on the roads. Taking into account the $30 processing fee, it is clear that the Suffolk County Legislature is utilizing this program as a means of subsidizing budget shortages in other areas. All of this is being done at the expense of the drivers on the roads of Suffolk County.

We do not support this Red Light Safety Program and wish for it to cease at once.
