Target:
Dean of Students and the DVC(AA) Egerton University
Region:
Kenya

APPRECIATING that Egerton University is a chartered university in kenya as legally contemplated by section 21 of the Universities Act, No.42 of 2012 and controlled by Statutes provided for in section 23 of the said Act

AWARE that the Students Union of Egerton University( SUEU) was formed purposely to ensure that Egerton University students welfare and rights have been well represented and channeled to the relevant authorities both within and without the university,

TAKING COGNISANCE that the preamble of the SUEU 2006 constitution provides that the constitution should be interpreted in a manner that " promotes the value of good governance and advances the rights and freedoms of the students"

FURTHER RECOGNIZING that SUEU commits itself to working for ,inter alia students rights and freedoms as contemplated in Section 3 of its constitution

NOTING FURTHER that section 41 sub-section 2 (a) of the Universities Act ,No.42 of 2012( amended 2015) gives the students union the prerogative of overseeing and coordinating students activities in consultation with the senate in a "moral and harmonious " manner

REGRETTING THAT on several events SUEU officials have failed to live upto the standards and norms of Leadership and Governance provided for in section 4 of the SUEU constitution , article 10 and Chapter 6 of the Kenyan 2010 constitution which has led to the following unfortunate turn of events;
1. Alleged Misappropriation of the Union's fund by several officials
2. Perceived biasness and prejudice by the union officials when dispensing their constitutional duties ,for instance issuance of bursaries , meal cards etc
3. Personal enmity / vendetta has taken a center stage among the officials wrought by by personal vested pecuniary interests hence stalling proper running the union
4 Alleged sexual exploitation by some union officials in return of some "favours" e.g bursary

FULLY KNOWING that all the above malpractices have impeded the seamless dispensation of services to students as required by the law

.

Now therefore ,
We, the undersigned ,call on the Office of Dean Of Students and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor(DVC,AA) to institute strong , expansive and holistic mechanisms both administrative and procedural ,to provide for the following :
1. That the Chairman of the Union together with his executive members shall be reporting to ALL students during an Annual General MeetingAGM) the steps taken and progress made in the realization of the Union's goals , values and principles as provided for in Section 9(d) of the SUEU constitution
2. In line with the Principle of Public Participation and Consultation , students to be allowed to give their recommendations on the SUEU BUDGET and that the Director Finace (DF) of the union to be giving Annual Financial Staement during the AGM to the students and the congress members as provided by section32(7) of the SUEU constitution
2. Regular conduct of internal audits on the union funds /kitty to ensure transparency and accountability is sustained. The report of the audits to be availed during the AGMs every year
3. Investigations to be carried out on matters pertaining bursaries and issuance of meal cards etc. to reveal any discrepancies thereof .
4. Tough action to be meted out on the leaders who violate the leadership’s code of conduct, particularly discrimination on the ethnic and tribal basis as this contravenes both the policy of Egerton university and the values and norms of the Kenyan 2010 constitution

Any action taken to effect this petition shall be highly appreciated
We the humble petitioners shall ever pray
