The Georgia General Assembly first considered honoring Paulk in 2001. Resolution 279 was signed. It was considered again in 2003 with Senate Resolution 828, and again in 2005.
Senate Resolution 429 passed on March 24th 2005 commending Bishop Earl Paulk "for his extraordinary service as a pastor and as a leading citizen of the State of Georgia." It also authorized erecting and maintaining signs with the new name Earl Paulk Parkway.
Bishop Earl Paulk is the founder and pastor of The Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Decatur, Ga. He recently gave his nephew the position of Senior Pastor. Bishop has pastored in the area for more than 30 years. Because of the sexual misconduct scandals with the worst being allegations from grand-daughter for child molestation it is deemed inappropriate to honor such a man with the renaming of a street after him.
We, the community of South Dekalb, call on our legislatures to change Earl Paulk Parkway back to Flat Shoals Parkway due to numerous scandals of sexual misconduct beginning from 1960 to most recent lawsuit filed in August 2005, and now added allegations by grand-daughter.
A trial date was set for April 2nd, 2007 as a result of lawsuit, and was dropped on Monday, March 5, 2007 due to problems with witnesses, but as of June 19, 2007 the lawsuit has been refiled. A new trial date will be set.
We, the undersigned, no longer want to be reminded of these scandals by seeing the street sign Earl Paulk Parkway. We ask that you retain the name to be Flat Shoals Parkway.
