Target:
Minister of Education
Region:
Ireland

At the age of 16 you can study for a few days and pass your theory test, get a learners permit and begin riding a motorcycle, or even drive a tractor, at 17 years old you can begin learning to drive a car all without serious road safety awareness or knowledge.

each year in Ireland we lose too many young people to road deaths and i believe this number can be reduced by introducing driver education to the leaving certificate syllabus.

The average age of people in Ireland who complete their leaving certificate is 17 years old.

Why do we not start our driver education in 5th year and have it as part of our curriculum?

The final test at the end of the leaving cert could be the actual theory test.
It would give students a proper driver education ending in a test result just like other subjects.

We the undersigned, call on the Minister of Education to introduce Driver education and road safety awareness in to the syllabus for the Leaving Certificate.
We feel that this formal training in the final two years of second level education will reduce the amount of deaths on Irish roads.
