There is a growing concern about Divvy's negligence to properly inform its customers not to ride on the sidewalks.

The law banning bikes on sidewalks was first passed in 1863. It has not been changed since, and therefore, it is still illegal to ride your bike on the sidewalk according the Chicago Municipal Code...

9-52-020 Riding bicycles on sidewalks and certain roadways.

a. No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a business district.
b. No person 12 or more years of age shall ride a bicycle upon any sidewalk in any district, unless such sidewalk has been officially designated and marked as a bicycle route.
c. Bicycles shall not be operated on Lake Shore Drive or on any roadway where the operation of bicycles has been prohibited and signs have been erected indicating such prohibition.
d. Whenever a usable path for bicycles has been provided adjacent to a roadway, bicycle riders shall use such path and shall not use the roadway.

We petition that Divvy Bikes of Chicago must clearly, in large print, warn its customers about the Chicago Municipal Code 9-52-020 'Riding bicycles on sidewalks and certain roadways' (see Preamble).

The Divvy station signs should specifically state the 9-52-020 law such that "No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a business district" and "No person 12 or more years of age shall ride a bicycle upon any sidewalk in any district, unless such sidewalk has been officially designated and marked as a bicycle route."

Each Divvy bike unit should abbreviate and reinstate this protocol with the printed message "Do not ride on sidewalks."

This petition is to ensure the safety of Chicagoans and Divvy customers.
