The Crystal Lake School District 47 Board of Education will host a public hearing on Nov. 6 to consider a proposal from the superintendent to alter the middle school day.

The new schedule will include more time for literacy, more time for math and more time for science. The math curriculum is based on a 60-minute period, and District 47 is currently teaching it in 40 minutes. The 40-minute science period allows little time for lab work, the hands-on experience children need.

The now required cooking and sewing classes (these are required, not electives) would be replaced by a life skills class that includes the study of money management and child care. These changes are not being proposed because of standardized tests. These changes are being proposed because they are what's best for the children in today's society.

We, the undersigned, call on the Crystal Lake Elementary School District 47 Board of Education to put the needs of children first and approve the revised middle school schedule as presented by the administration.
