The Covid-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented disruption to our country and community. On March 9th, Governor JB Pritzker declared a state of emergency and subsequent government decisions have shut down large parts of our economy. In the last 2 weeks alone, almost 10 million people have filed for unemployment. The financial strain on our community has been immense.

The federal government has passed various forms of financial relief to people filing for unemployment, for working families, and for small businesses but much more needs to be done.

Normally, on June 1st, property taxes are due in Champaign County. It is unrealistic to expect that the financial disruption caused by Covid-19 makes it reasonable for many families to meet the burden of paying their property taxes on time and in full. The government has asked us to put our economy on hold, its only fair that their tax collection also be put on hold.

The State has already delayed collection of income taxes and sales taxes, it should do the same for property taxes.

We, the undersigned, call on the Champaign County government to delay property tax bills for 90 days without penalty to give working families, struggling businesses, and those who have lost their jobs the flexibility the need during this crisis.

This simple action can be taken by county government directly and needs no special legislation from the state or federal government.

We call on the county board to stand with those most harmed by the Covid-19 pandemic and delay collection of property taxes.
