Deforestation is the complete removal of a forest ecosystem and conversion of the land to another type of landscape (Gale Science in Context, 2014). It entails the systematic chopping down of trees and other vegetation in forest ecosystems, in order to acquire materials like lumber, or make room for agricultural land. Deforestation is a major contributor of habitat loss in thousands of species across the Earth. Millions of animals have been forcefully evicted from their forest homes, and have died in the new lands that they could not adapt to survive in. As a result, many species have become critically endangered or even extinct, reducing worldwide biodiversity. Trees are an incredibly valuable source of oxygen on our planet. By absorbing carbon dioxide, they take in harmful gases and redistribute it as the gas that we breathe. Deforestation is removing this source of oxygen. As humans use fossil fuels more and more, oxygen is becoming a scarcer commodity. This is why it's important to preserve trees, in order to preserve the gas we breathe.

My proposed solution to deforestation is the implementation of vertical farming, which is storing farms in tall buildings, putting the plants under lights, and saving lots of space. 80% of the world's arable land is already in use, and there is no need to cut down forests in order to secure that last 20%. We can simply build up with our farms, and have unlimited space.
