Firstly let me say from the beginning that I am not a ganja user.
I do see the economics of marijuana though .
For years since I was a young boy I have seen the use of marijuana attract scorn and shame
from some members of the society restricting its use to dark secret corridors away from the glare of the authorities.
Today is a much different time and ganja is no longer restricted to those hidden places. Study after study have educated us today and has put marijuana use into the mainstream dispelling the false narrative about its danger as gateway drug.
Marijuana today has been largely proven safe and is now considered big business (look at the USA ).
The problem though is that the Caribbean leadership refuses to accept the huge potential that this product gives us.
Consider this...
A large section of the TnT population uses or have used marijuana before.
People at all levels of society all use marijuana regularly including politicians, police , soldiers , teachers , doctors and many others.
Most of the abundantly available marijuana used locally is imported using very scare U.S. dollars.
Alcohol and gambling are much more destructive to users and their family than marijuana use.
Too many families and young men are incarcerated for marijuana use causing broken homes and crime by users trying to get money to pay greedy police and lawyers.
Some immediate benefits from decriminalization of marijuana include but not restricted to
1. A much needed saving of U.S. currency that will have otherwise gone to pay foreign sellers for product to import.
2. Decriminalizing marijuana will cause a reduction in price due to increased availability of the product thereby causing an immediate reduction in drug related crime caused by turf wars.
3. A reduction of cost to the state to house and feed offenders thus saving tax payers millions of dollars annually.
4. Marijuana can be used for medicinal purposes as in other countries , thus helping relieve the burden on the state for some ailments.
5. Saving of police and court time on an already congested injustice system thus again saving millions.
6. All that money that would have otherwise gone abroad to purchase marijuana would be free to circulate in the local economy for job creation and investment.
7. A much needed boost in tourism and possible increase in the avg tourist spend from visitors , making it a US dollar earner.
8. Less illegal guns on our streets because marijuana trade is usually accompanied by the illegal gun trade. Drugs are usually accompanied by guns to supply dealers for turf wars. Removal of these activities will result in safer streets.
This is just a brief discussion for what I see as a compelling case for the decriminalization of a potential cash crop.
PLEASE Consider seriously for the sake of this beloved country.
PATRIOT.

We the undersigned citizens and concerned friends of Trinidad and Tobago, call on the Government and Opposition to seriously consider and take action on the Decriminalization of Marijuana.
We believe that this progressive step will bring much needed relief to our burdened justice system , thereby saving our country millions of dollars annually and will also go a long way towards making our streets and communities much safer.
