Access to Bonita Beach on the Gulf shore of Florida at Bonita Springs can be had by pedestrians only by crossing busy Hickory Boulevard. A gentle approach to Lee County Department to Transportation to install legal crosswalks at critical points has been met with denial. Residents of the Little Hickory Island, visitors, arriving bus passengers, and casual beach users must face the hazardous task of crossing the boulevard with no pedestrian right of way and no legal way to cause vehicle traffic to yield at critical points of entry. Lee County DOT, which controls the road, maintains that there are insufficient numbers of injuries and deaths , implying that the street is safe for pedestrians as it is. This is in error.

The undersigned persons petition Lee County, Florida, Department of Transportation to install legal crosswalks at all ten accesses to the beach on Little Hickory Island. Lee County Department of Transportation has denied reasonable efforts to install legal crosswalks for pedestrian passage across Hickory Boulevard to half of the beach accesses. If left without marked crosswalks, pedestrians face unnecessary hazards when crossing Hickory Boulevard and find themselves in violation of Florida Statute 316.130. Ever increasing traffic from excessive development on northern islands is causing hazardous conditions for pedestrians to access our beach, sidewalks, and bus stops. Injuries and deaths should not be required before pedestrian safety is created with simple measures when the existing risk is obvious.
