Target:
Petition against prospective mining operations by West Wits Mining on the Westrand of Johannesburg
Region:
South Africa

The Communities of Florida and Roodepoort hereby join hands in opposing an application by West Wits Mining Company to start an open gold mine alongside residential areas Florida Park, Hamberg, Georginia, Creswell Park, Roodepoort CBD, Matholesville and Witpoortjie. It is obvious that the Mining Company is financially driven, but the residents have a lot more than that at stake, including social and economic disruption, pollution, health risks for human and animals as well as ecological destruction. It also carry a big risk on resident's biggest life investment, their homes. This area is also sensitive being host to two dams (Florida Lake and Hamberg Dam) as well as the Hammerkop Bird Sanctuary.

We, the undersigned, hereby make an urgent and desperate call on the South African Government, National and Provincial including the relevant Departments, not to allow open or underground mining of any sort in the Main Reef strip, stretching from Florida Lake to Witpoortjie in Roodepoort, as this is mostly adjacent to a residential zone. This is also a very important transport exchange region that connects the bigger Soweto area to the Northern Areas of the Joburg/Pretoria Metropolis. Allowing mining will suffocate more than just our own suburban cell, but also the thoroughfare through the Westrand to the North.
