Johannesburg has become unsafe and ugly. It is an embarrassment to the residents. We are ashamed that tourists are subjected to a city in tatters and that our children are exposed to the rot that is now written all over the face of the city. Posters about abortion and penis enlargement are plastered everywhere; pavements are cracked with weeds growing out of them, creating not only an unsightly mess, but a danger to pedestrians; roads are crumbling, endangering motorists, runners, cyclists and pedestrians; potholes have become dongas that put the lives of motorists and passengers at risk; speed humps are not painted and, therefore, not visible; street lights are falling over, their internal wires exposed, the cables between them hanging down; graffiti mars the walls of the city in residential and business districts, exposing our children to foul language and graphic images; rubbish lines the streets, floats down the rivers, clings to fences and litters parks, creating unhygienic and dangerous conditions for the wildlife and the residents of what was once a clean and beautiful city. We pay exorbitant rates and taxes and we want to see that they are being used for the good of our city. We, the citizens of Johannesburg, our children and visitors to our city are being put in danger by the appalling lack of service delivery from the government and municipality.

We, the undersigned, hereby petition the local government and municipality, represented by Dr Ndivho Lukhwareni, the Johannesburg City Manager, to clean up Johannesburg.
We call on the City Manager, members of the mayoral committee and ward councillors to carry out urgent repairs on Johannesburg's crumbling roads and pavements; remove the rubbish that litters our streets and parks; repair streetlights; repair traffic lights; remove graffiti; remove illegal posters advertising penis enlargement, abortion etc and to impose heavy fines on the perpetrators; paint speed humps and repair street signs. We call on Dr Lukhwareni to carry out, first an urgent clean-up and repair operation, and, second, regular maintenance and clean-up operations to ensure that the city remains clean and safe for all residents and visitors. We call on Dr Lukhwareni, to address these issues as a matter of the greatest urgency.
