In 2011 Redbridge Council started using a lamppost camera to fine drivers doing U-turns in Clayhall Avenue. Most were local residents who'd been doing this for years, because people who live in the Hill Farm estate cannot otherwise travel westwards without making a long detour.

Roding Ward Lib Dem Councillors made the Council do its own U-turn as it was found that most of the fines were not legal. £60K of penalty notices were stopped and £10K of fines refunded. But now Conservative Councillors in the neighbouring area want the U-turns banned completely - even though this would create traffic chaos in other locations and be a major inconvenience for many people.

Ideally there would be a roundabout at the Clayhall Avenue/Woodofrd Avenue junction but unless and until Transport for London agree to this, Redbridge Council must retain the option of turning in Clayhall Avenue.

We the undersigned ask Redbridge Council:

- to oppose any plan to extend the U-turn ban in Clayhall Avenue, until such time as a roundabout can be installed at the junction with Woodford Avenue;

-to note that U-turns at Clayhall Avenue (north of Claybury Broadway) have been permitted by the Council for over forty years;

- not to make any changes at this junction without fully consulting both Hill Farm residents and the Woodford Area Committee.
