Chantaey's Story.
My name is Carla Fenton Katchmar, and on July 1st 2012 our 16 year old daughter Chantaey Katchmar passed away from drug overdose. Chantaey was a fun, loving, spiritual, compassionate, caring, beautiful and yes she also was a little spit fire, that was also strong minded girl who loved life, and got herself in the rut of drugs and that rut just got deeper and deeper, that it took her life from her and the family.
We as a family had reached out for her, but the so called system we have failed Chantaey and the family. We as parents seem to have no rights to protect our children from themselves. They the youths have the right to leave a treatment facility at anytime, they have the right to not even go if they do not want to. At 16 they can leave to any city or place, and as parents we do not have the right to know where they are living.
We also as parents do not have the rights to know of their health concerns. This petition is for the Provincial Government to amend the law, that we as parents have rights to our children till they are 18. Giving us rights through proper channels to put our addicted child in a locked facility when need be,and that we have rights to their health concerns.
We, the undersigned residents of the Province of Saskatchewan, wish to bring to your attention the following:
The definition of child in provincial legislation limits the ability of law enforcement and social service agencies to intervene to help children between 16 and 18 years of age. The result is that parents are often unable to assist teenagers with serious addiction problems because their children decline voluntary help.
We, in prayer that reads as follows, respectfully that the Government of Saskatchewan:
Take the necessary steps and actions to improve access to addiction programs for children between the age of 16 and 18 years including extending the power to order involuntary committals at treatment facilities and extending the time for involuntary treatment.
