The current recommendation of The World Health Organisation and all the state governments of Australia regarding the introduction of solids is that they be delayed until a baby is 6 months old.

Numerous studies demonstrate that babies who are given solids earlier are more prone to allergies, asthma, obesity and nutritional deficiencies. A number of companies that manufacture baby foods label their foods as being suitable for babies who are 4 months old although they are not.

This labelling is misleading and irresponsible. It encourages carers to start feeding their babies solids before it is appropriate to do so.

We the undersigned call on Food Standards Australia New Zealand to amend baby food labeling laws so that baby food labels adhere to WHO guidelines.

Labels that claim that foods are suitable from 4 months should no longer be permitted.
