Change Bahir Dar Airport's name from Ginbot 20 to Belay Zelleke
- Target:
- Ethiopian Airport Enterprise
- Region:
- Ethiopia
While all other airports in regional towns and cities of Ethiopia has been named either by the names of the respective cities or by a national hero, Bahir Dar's international airport, however, is named after "Ginbot 20" a day when the incumbent ruling party overthrew the previous regime through a sustained civil war that lasted for 17 years. This day, although is a day of triumph for the ruling party, nevertheless, it has never been a day that has unified the Nation; rather has brought the country to a brink of collapse following years of public unrest all over the country.
To put the matter in perspective, Mekelle Airport is named after Was Alula Abba Mega, a national hero; Axum airport is named after Atse Yohannes; Gondar Airport is named after Atse Tewodros; and the rest of the airports named after their respective town/city names. The question is therefore, why Bahir Dar is an exception? Is it because Bahir Dar and the people of Gojjam/Amhara don't have their heroes?
Again, is it legally appropriate to name an international airport and one that is of the public's and of the government's institution by a single party's interest?
The answer to the above legal and logical questions is an absolute No!
It is therefore to demand justice for the interest of the people of Bahir Dar, Gojjam/Amhara and all Ethiopian brothers and sisters who don't want the name of this day that only marked a bloody civil war and a subsequent tyrant government, to be erased from public and governmental institutions including the Bahir Dar International Airport which is named by "Ginbot 20"
Please sign a petition so that Bahir Dar's international airport be named after Belay Zelleke, the timeless patriot and hero who defended his country from a colonial invasion.
We thank you!!!
