Bill O'Rourke is an Outstanding Crossing Guard and an exceptional human being. It's hard to express how much safer and richer everyone that interacts with Bill O'Rourke feels but anyone who knows him has a heartfelt experience to share.
Bill has faithfully served his community and has guarded and directed our children and adults at the corner of Baldwin and Locust Ave. for several years. Last summer, Bill was notified that he was being transferred to another corner. Bill told the city that he didn't want to be moved and that he wished to remain at his original post. The City refused to oblige him and replaced him with a new guard. When the community heard of this, we were all outraged and expressed our upset as well. The City refused to make any change during the school year. Since the first day of school in Septmeber 2011, Bill O'Rourke has been patiently waiting for the City to reinstate him to Baldwin/Locust.
The City has been quoted saying "The City is open to returning Crossing Guard Bill" (posted by Marianne Meed Ward on October 2, 2011). This summer the City has the opportunity to make some changes and reinstate Bill back to Baldwin/Locust for the new school year come September 2012.
We, the community of Central High and Public School, call on the City of Burlington Mayor's office and the Dept. of Traffic Services to reinstate Bill O'Rourke aka "Bill the Crossing Guard", back to his former post of Baldwin and Locust Ave. in September 2012.
Let Bill have his place back where he can continue to do what he is so very passionate about. Let him continue to take good care of the community of Central High and Public School. He has waited long enough and so have we all. The City needs to listen to the voices of hundreds of children/parents/neighbours and of Bill, and this summer, make the change that we all want and come September 2012,
