United States of America

In recent years, residents of rural communities like Canal Point, Lake Harbor, Belle Glade, and South Bay have faced increasing transportation barriers due to the removal of Palm Tran Route 48. For many people in these areas — especially those without access to a car — the bus was the only way to reach work, school, grocery stores, medical care, and public services.

The current Go Glades service has not been an adequate replacement. It is difficult to schedule, often unreliable, and does not operate on a consistent or predictable route. As a result, rural residents are left without safe, affordable, and dependable public transportation.

This is not just an inconvenience — it's a public equity issue. Without reliable transit, people are cut off from opportunity, support, and safety. We’re calling on Palm Tran, the Palm Beach County Board of County Commissioners, and transportation planners to reinstate Route 48, or create a fixed-route or free community bus that serves these areas regularly.

Residents shouldn’t be stranded simply because they live in a rural ZIP code. Public transportation should be a right, not a privilege.

We, the undersigned, respectfully petition Palm Tran and Palm Beach County to reinstate Bus Route 48 or provide a reliable fixed-route or free community bus service to support residents from Canal Point to Lake Harbor, especially those living in rural areas without access to a car.

For many in these communities, public transportation is the only way to get to work, school, healthcare, grocery stores, and other essential services. When Route 48 was discontinued, it cut off a vital lifeline—leaving rural residents isolated and without options.

The current Go Glades system is not an effective replacement. It is difficult to schedule, often unreliable, and does not run frequently enough to meet the basic needs of the community. Many residents without cars are now stranded or forced to rely on expensive or unavailable alternatives.

We are urging Palm Tran to:

Reinstate Bus Route 48,
OR

Create a consistent fixed-route service through Canal Point, Belle Glade, South Bay, and Lake Harbor,
OR

Launch a free or low-cost community bus with a dependable schedule serving rural areas.

Transportation should be a right, not a barrier. Help us restore access and mobility for rural residents who depend on it most.
