Recognition of the effort and courage, after forty-four years, of Jan Bernstein, (THS '75) with the support of her late mother Joan and father James; served to cause the Tenafly Board of Education to establish the first interscholastic athletic team for girls attending Tenafly High School.
From the first varsity girls, Tennis, team; now exist 13 interscholastic athletic teams on which girls participate (Cross Country, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Bowling, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track, Swimming, Golf, Lacrosse, Softball and spring Track & Field.)
The Tenafly High School Athletic Hall of Fame has inducted 40, (4 representing Tennis), student athlete girls.
The Record's "Athlete of the Week", since 1989, has recognized 14 THS student athlete girls, (2 representing Tennis).
Numerous team (League/Conference, County, State) championships earned by THS girls' Tennis and other teams grace the halls of THS and Littler Gymnasium.
The memories and life lessons learned through participation in the countless practices, scrimmages, training, competitions and " . . . thrill of victory and agony of defeat . . . " is incalculable.
Title IX, a Federal amendment enacted in June, 1972, needed to be "served" to those responsible on a local level for providing a " . . . free and appropriate education . . . " and that " . . . exclusion, denial or discrimination . . . " would no longer be an obstacle of participation for students of another gender.
WE, having electronically signed this petition, request
the Administration of Tenafly Public Schools and its
“Facilities Naming Committee”,
pursuant to Policy 7250 “School and Facility Names”;
recommend the Tenafly Board of Education by resolution
name in perpetuity the outdoor tennis court complex
located at Tenafly High School the
“BERNSTEIN TENNIS COURTS @ THS”
in honor of
Jan Bernstein
THS ‘75
