Allergic reactions to PPD, a chemical found in hair dyes are on the rise, many cases are severe and needless deaths have occurred while others have suffered permanent health issues from the use of these products.

In Canada PPD is not permitted in products intended for use on the skin but is permitted in oxidative hair dyes. The scalp, ears, shoulders, hands and arms are at risk.

This chemical is absorbed in to the body through the scalp and for those who are allergic, the body starts producing mass amounts of histamine in protest and attacks the immune system. Severe hives, chemical burns, blindness, hair loss, coma, death have been linked.

We are calling for a ban/restriction on the chemical PPD (para-phenylenediamine) which is found in numerous Hair Dye products. The chemical can also be found in other products such as henna tattoos, printing inks, fur dyes and other cosmetics.

This chemical is extremely dangerous and can cause severe allergic reactions, resulting in significant injuries to those who use/work with such products. Other European countries have banned this chemical from sale due to the risk it poses to consumers.

We call on the government to ban/restrict the sale of products containing PPD (para-phenylenediamine).
