100 million sharks are killed each year. As a result of this the shark population has dropped by 90% in the last 30 years and will continue to decline if we allow the trade of shark fins. The act of fining a shark is atrocious as 95% of the shark is wasted and thrown back into the water.
Fishing boats will take sharks regardless of their age, size or species. Shark fining takes place at sea so the fishers have only the fins to transport. Shark meat is considered low value and therefore not worth the cost of transporting the bulky shark bodies to market.
We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Government to revisit and amend the loop hole that allows the import of shark fins into Australia.
