Ban Straws and All Plastic Utensils

As you may know, plastic is non-biodegradable and our use of plastic, mainly straws, are polluting the ocean rapidly killing marine lives. According to strawlessocean.org, the United States alone uses approximately 500 million plastic straws every single day. Scientists have also estimated that at this rate of consumption, by 2050 there will be more plastic straws than fish in the ocean. It is also projected that by 2050, 99% of all sea bird species will have ingested plastic. Research have shown that plastic is already present in our sea salt, 94% of U.S. tap water, and shell fish. The University of Hawaii published a study revealing that when plastic gets exposed to their environment, like the sun and sea, it will release methane and ethylene, two threatening greenhouse gases, intensifying the rate of global warming. Although, banning plastic straws in only a small course of action, it is the step in the right direction.
