Throughout many public schools children through all grades are losing their right to individuality and we as the domineering generation are taking it away from them. As a teacher I can't help but view some of these codes and punishments as ludicrous.
If a student is seen as disruptive to their own or others education, what is taking the time to pull them from class and punishing them doing exactly? I recently had a student drop out as she was constantly harassed for dress code among a few other problems. She had a thick or busty body type and had been written up many times as they mistook her dress pants for leggings. Yet, there were other students of a more slim figure wearing the accused item and they walked right past administration undetected.
Everyone has a different body type and it's wrong to shame someone for theirs. On top of that the students may not have visible tattoos or piercings or unnaturally colored hair. As I see it, it's between the student and parent to decide that as this is a part of them as a being. It seems the administration has taken the role of a strict and limiting parent versus a means of education
With this said, I wish to eliminate, if not limit the regulations of dress code. Just like a normal dress code, pants or shorts must rest just above the knee for both boys and girls, and shirts must be limited to tank top at minimum covering cleavage and stomach, if this is not possible it should be asked that they wear either a hoodie or jacket over said type.
To prevent sagging students are permitted to wear a belt if they fail to keep their pants at waist height. Each school will have varying consequences for violations but I feel this will ease tension and make it a more friendly environment for student and teacher alike. As for hair, tattoos, and piercings. As long as they are not provocative or vulgar they shall be allowed and not frowned upon.
