Thank you to everyone who signed and supported this campaign. Many of you probably received the email from Pamela Hatchfield that said that AIC has a working group to review past certification efforts and now they have agreed to create "a sub-group that will assist AIC through continued research into certification programs." This petition is now closed.
The lack of certification remains an obstacle to the growth of conservation as a modern professional discipline.
Between 2000 and 2009, the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC) explored the idea of developing a certification program for conservators, but the membership finally voted against adopting the proposed measures. For more information on that process, see: http://www.conservation-us.org/docs/default-source/governance/certification-history_2014.pdf
Nearly eight years have passed since that vote took place. The membership of AIC has changed and with it, ideas regarding the need for accreditation.
We the undersigned would like AIC to reconsider the merits of certification for the profession, including reviewing the objections that caused the previous effort to be unsuccessful and considering the practical means of implementing a future program administered by AIC.
(If you are comfortable doing so, please include your AIC membership status in the comments section next to your signature.)
