Vinland Saga is set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatization of King Cnut the Great's historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.
The presentation and style of the series has been compared by reviewers to the more realistically grounded segments of Kentaro Miura's classic dark fantasy manga Berserk.
Vinland Saga has been commercially successful in Japan, with combined sales of 1.2 million copies for the first five volumes as of June 2008, and several volumes appeared on the Taiyosha top ten best-selling manga list. The series was nominated for the 2008 Manga Taisho award. In 2009, it was awarded the Grand Prize in the manga division of the Japan Media Arts awards. Vinland Saga has attracted the attention of the international manga community and has received a glowing review by The Comics Journal.
Makoto Yukimura's historical epic is worthy of its praise for it astonishing artwork and storytelling. Vinland Saga deserves the right to be on all bookshelves and read by all.
To all fans of manga, and anime. Makoto Yukimura's Vinland Saga has caught the attention of many readers, but has yet to be released in America.
I believe if we can get together and make our voices heard Dark Horse will listen. Dark Horse has listened to it's fans in the past when we wanted Gantz released, and they heard our call.
To my knowledge American publishers have not even heard of Vinland Saga, but we have to make them at least acknowledge it's existence!
Dark Horse has published many manga series of various degrees of subject matter. Vinland Saga, much like Berserk in it's style, will fit right at home amongst its other mature titles.
