In 1996, Prince George’s County, MD City Council passed a ban against American Terriers (pit bulls) making it illegal to own any breed of dog related to or resembling the American Terrier. This law is breed specific and singles out one breed of dog as opposed to any "dangerous" dog or other breeds.

In 2005, 1,000 pit bulls were seized in PG County, in which 800 were euthanized. These dogs have been labeled dangerous and many have been euthanized unjustly. This petition calls for amending this law to allow responsible owners to register and enjoy American Terriers as with any other breed of dog.

American Terriers should not be punished for the upbringing it received from incompetent owners. In addition, there should be strict penalties for owners who raise unregistered dogs and breed "ANY" dangerous dog with intent to harm citizens or animals.

We, the people of Prince Georges County call on the PG City Council and PG Government to amend/repeal the ban against the American Terrier Breed and increase penalties for negligent owners who abuse and unjustly breed any dog (of any breed) to engage in inhumane activities.
