Action on Victoria Park Racecourse

The Victoria Park Racecourse is located in the Southern Parklands of Adelaide, South Australia. It is the host of many major sporting events throughout the calender year including The Adelaide International Hourse Trials and part of The Clipsal 500 circuit.

The Victoria Park Racecourse is home to Australia's longest straight and was where the first formal horse race was staged. In recent times, the grand-stands and surroundings of the racecourse have fallen from grace. Because of the lack of sufficient facilities at the racecourse the South Australian Government have proposed plans to construct a permanent facility to house events such as The Clipsal 500 which is held annually in Adelaide each year.

Over the course of 2007 the Adelaide City Council has knocked back the proposal for a $55 million dollar grand-stand on numerous occasions. Many believe that the construction of the facility would be against Conel William Lights' original plan and purpose for the Adelaide Parklands.

At the moment the Victoria Park Racecourse has two old and run down grandstands both of which can no longer be used for their intended purpose. The development of the new $55 million facility would still comprise of the demolition of the grandstands but the heritage one is still to remain.

The development of this new infrastructure would benefit no only the Horse and Motor Car racing industries in South Australia but it is something that the state needs to ensure it's reputation as a state that is capable of holding world class sporting events.
