Claims by traders that free parking significantly boosts town centre shopping have been backed up by research.

Nearly three quarters of motorists say the charges determine whether they visit a town centre, resort or attraction.

There is 'deep rooted scepticism' about the amount drivers are forced to pay, with 89 per cent believing fees are ramped up to maximise income for councils.

The findings by the AA come after traders in the town of Cardigan reported a sales boost of up to 50% after all its parking machines broke down.

Town halls are on course to make a record £687 million from parking charges this year, despite Government warnings that fees should not be used to raise revenue.

The survey also found that 67% thought that car park operators treat users badly.

AA president Edmund King said: 'The deep-rooted suspicion is that parking charges and penalties serve only one purpose-propping up council coffers'.

We, the undersigned, call on Pembrokeshire County Council to bring about the Abolition of all Parking restrictions in Pembroke Dock Town Centre in order to restore the High Street to the centre of Business it once was.
