Premiere Robert Ghiz, and the Provincial Court Judges

Canada

For too long drunk drivers on Prince Edward Island have received nothing more than a 'slap on the wrist'. Although the Government of PEI began a 'crack-down' on drunk drivers, there have been no changes in the amount of punishment that drivers receive.

Drunk drivers are a danger to themselves, and more importantly, to law-abiding citizens. The Government and Court Judges need to step up and set an example. We will no longer stand by while these potential killers receive joke sentences.

We, the undersigned, demand that the Government of Prince Edward Island and Provincial Court Judges do their duty to the law-abiding citizens of PEI.

Maximum court sentences in Canadian law allow our justice system to send a harsh, clear message to drunk drivers: you will not be tolerated.

On PEI we see sentences being handed out that barely surpass the minimum requirements of sentencing. We demand that drunk drivers receive severe punishment for their crimes. We demand longer jail time and more support for our Provincial RCMP, in apprehending these people.

We should not have to watch in silence as these lenient sentences send out the message that the people of PEI do not matter.

We, the undersigned, request that from this point forward our Government and Justice System do everything in their power to protect its citizens by ensuring drunk drivers no longer receive just the minimum sentence for their crime.
