Bahrain has turned into the "Island of Fear" as a result of the recent crackdown on peaceful protesters. The protests started on Feb. 14th demanding basic humn rights and urging the Bahraini government to end the ongoing discrimination practised by the ruling Sunni minority on the Shiite majority.

Since Feb. 14th to date, over 2000 pro-democracy activists, journalists, bloggers, as well as simple men, women, and even children as young as 12 have been detained by the notorious State Security Apparatus.

Several of those detained have had their dead bodies delivered to their families within a few days, marked with clear signs of vicious torture.

The regime has fired thousands of workers, sportspeople, students and teachers simply for supporting the reformist protests and demanding change.

8 activists are sentenced to life in prison, and 4 are sentenced to death.

Kingdom of Bahrain

Your Majesty,

We are very concerned about the human rights situation unfolding in Bahrain. As people in your kingdom continue their struggle for freedom and democracy, international human rights agencies continue to confirm reports of military courts delivering harsh sentences, including life in prison and death sentences to pro-democracy and ordinary citizens.

We urge you to free all prisoners of conscience and demonstrators, including eight activists sentenced for life last month. We also call upon you to end the practice of delivering sentences in military courts to activists who advocates for political reforms.

We are also shocked and deeply concerned about media, and witness reports describing torture while in state custody. We find such reports completely unacceptable. We also find the dismissal or suspension of more than 2000 people from their work mounts to collective punishment of the Bahraini people and is unjustified.

Detaining people for simply practicing their rights to freedom of expression is condemned.

We are confident in your Majesty to find the mentioned abuses are also reprehensible to you, and they need your immediate attention and remedy. We hope you will agree with us in respecting and adhering to the international law of human rights that Bahrain rectified under its obligation to the international community. Your immediate action to bring an end to such breach of the law is paramount and is urgently needed.

Sincerely,
