中華人民共和國國家主席胡錦濤 President Hu Jintao, People's Republic of China

Prominent Beijing-based human rights activist and AIDS activist Hu Jia was taken away by national security police officers (guobao) on 27 December 2007. He was criminally detained on the following day on suspicion of "incitement to subvert state power".

Hu's wife Zeng Jinyan, also a well-known activist, and their one-month-old daughter were under severe surveillance at home and Zeng was not allowed to have outside contacts.

Updates (April 2008): On 3 April 2008, Hu Jia was sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment by the Beijing No. 1 Intermediate People's Court on the charge of "inciting subversion of state power". He was also deprived of his political rights for one year. He was accused of writing five articles and doing interviews for two times with overseas media between August 2006 and October 2007. His wife, Zeng Jinyan, and their four-month-old daughter were still being under house arrest at home.

We, the undersigned, call on the Chinese government to immediately release Beijing activist Hu Jia. We are deeply concerned that his detention was conducted in an illegal way by the national security officers in Beijing. We are also very disappointed that Hu Jia was at last imprisoned for expressing his views on human rights and politics.

China is going to host the Beijing Olympics in summer this year (2008). It is important for the Chinese government to ensure the development of rule of law in China which was a pledge made by the Chinese government when it applied to host the international sports event in 2001.

We strongly believe that it can help make the international community understand that the Chinese government is genuinely concerned about the rule of law and human rights if it releases human rights activists like Hu Jia and Zeng Jinyan who have merely been exercising their rights to carry out their human rights advocacy work in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution, other laws and regulations of the People's Republic of China.

Thank you very much for your attention.

Yours sincerely,
