Say No to Sergio

The Newtown "say no to burqas" mural is demeaning, serves to obstruct intelligent debate and is just plain silly.

It's "creator" Sergio Redegalli has attempted to justify the mural by claiming that it is "not anti-Muslim" (1). Why then does he wear t-shirts with anti-Muslim slogans(2)? Why does he start ranting about his fear of a "Sharia law" takeover of the country when being interviewed(1)?

Redegalli seems to think that he is on a mission to save us all from the imaginary Inner-West terrorist cells, "I'm not going to let the bullies win" he declares(3)! He seems to have forgotten that his mural began its life depicting a Muslim woman, (minority), with a huge red cross through her painted by a white middle class, middle aged man, (majority). Sorry, who is the bully?

Redegalli is right, (perhaps that should be “far-far right”- the Australian Protectionist Party worships him {4}), about one thing he has gotten people talking. The problem is however is that all of the talk is about him. Regardless of which way you are leaning there must be a better quality of debate or if nothing else a better quality of person to have the debate with.
