I am deaf, wear two hearing aids and still work full time. The lip reading classes I go to once a week in Surrey are invaluable to me.

Lip reading is an art that needs constant practice with a qualified teacher and in a group situation, where we all practice together. I have no idea what the thinking is behind the closure of these classes.

I can't help thinking that this has to do with the fact that blindness is taken more seriously than deafness in our society.

We, the undersigned, are asking the Department for Business Innovation and Skills to reclassify lipreading as an 'essential' skill so that more people can attend a lipreading class.
