According to the annual national traffic study by the Texas Transportation Institute Washington continues to rank second to Los Angeles in auto congestion, which causes the average driver to waste about 62 hours a year crawling through traffic. Factoring in the price of gas and lost productivity, sitting in traffic cost the Washington area almost $2.8 billion in 2007.

Although there are several projects in progress that are aimed to ease the traffic on main highways in the area, nothing is being done to increase traffic efficiency in the city of Washington itself. No city is able to handle such a high volume of vehicles that is pouring in our nation's capital, but at least something can be done to improve the situation.

One of the issues that requires immediate attention is the problem with vehicles illegally parked on main routes in Washington DC. Because of these cars, main 3 lanes roads are turned into two lanes, which substantially decrease the efficiency of driving around the city especially during the rush hour.

I propose to start enforcing parking rules on main routes in Washington DC in order to increase the flow of traffic in and out of the city.

Vehicles that are illegally parked on major roads during rush hours should be fined and towed at owners expense for violations of the rules. These measures will help thousands of drivers to faster and easier navigate through the city.

The Enforcing parking rules on major routes in Washington DC petition to The District Department of Transportation was written by Yuliya Belaya and is in the category Roads & Transport at GoPetition.
