#Animal Welfare
Target:
Mayor Villaraigosa
Region:
United States of America

Our campaign is to save the lives of thousands of lost and homeless animals by having Mayor Villaraigosa appoint a No Kill General Manager of animal services for the city of Los Angeles. Each year thousands of potentially adoptable animals are killed and the appointment of a compassionate General Manager could significantly decrease the killing.

In Los Angeles the 2008 animal service statistical report cites 19,617 dogs and cats were euthanized while only 26,285 were adopted. This was a 30% increase from the year before. These statistics highlight the high kill rates of the LA shelters.

Currently many shelters in the United States are either No Kill or moving towards No Kill, notably in large cities like San Francisco and New York City. By having the Mayor appoint a No Kill director, shelters in the LA area will move closer to a goal of No Kill.

It is our hope that appointing a General Manager who is dedicated to implementing No Kill policies will restructure the animal services system to create a cost efficient option that does not require the death of animals for space. In particular, the expansion of low cost and free spay and neuter programs around the city and the expansion and introduction of foster programs to help temporarily home animals until there is space in a shelter for them. Help us appoint a No Kill General Manager of animals for the city of Los Angeles; it is an issue deserves immediate attention.

We, the undersigned, call on Mayor Villaraigosa to appoint a No Kill LA Animal Shelter Services General Manager.
