A SOMBRE convoy bearing the face of killed truck driver Robert Cook will set out today to highlight the dangers of the Bruce Hwy.

Mr Cook and his friend Darren Lucas died on the highway in June in a horrific crash at the Gympie Rd overpass at Tinana while they were travelling from Toowoomba to Maryborough.

More than 100 trucks will leave from Toowoomba and Brisbane to converge at Gatton Showgrounds, bearing the banners with the names of Mr Cook and other people who have died on Queensland's roads.

Mr Cook's mother Shirley Bennett said the drivers would also be carrying a petition asking for the Bruce Hwy to be upgraded urgently, to help prevent crashes in the future.

The convoy will also visit Maryborough in about two weeks.

The trucking convoy will follow the route that Mr Cook travelled before his death.

“We are waiting for two crosses to be built so we can place them at Maryborough,” Mrs Bennett said.

“We will also be giving out the petition to service stations and stops along the way.”

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

The petition is available online, by visiting www.gopetition.com. Search for Gympie Road Overpass.
