GIRLS at Presdales in Ware are choosing to shiver in the cold rather than wear the "unfashionable" school coat. A protest petition has now been established, calling for the school to relax its rules on the "hideous and impractical" coats.

All girls entering the school in Year 7 are expected to purchase the official garment from John Lewis at a cost of £51.
The father of one Year 11 pupil said: "This coat is universally loathed by the pupils. "If you see any girl on the way to school or on the way home, come rain, wind or snow, you will see her without a coat."

A petition set up at www.gopetition.co.uk calls for the removal of the coat from the uniform at the Hoe Lane secondary for girls.
"We now have regular coat checks and letters are sent home if you cannot produce a regulation school coat," said the author.
