SUPPORT is growing among people in East Yorkshire for a permanent tribute to Hull City hero Dean Windass.

The Mail is getting behind the hundreds already calling for a grand gesture by asking every reader to show support for our Deano: We Salute You campaign.

As part of the campaign, we are asking people to sign up to an online petition for a Hull street or public space to be renamed after the Wembley goalscorer, whose strike sent the Tigers into the Premier League.

Tammy Cole, landlady of the Silver Cod in Anlaby Road, west Hull – one of the areas in which a road could be renamed – said the idea was fantastic.

She said: “It's a fantastic idea to have a street named after him. After all, he's our main goalscorer.

“He should definitely go down in history.

“The crowd in here watching him play at Wembley will certainly never forget him.”

Susan Pickering, a barmaid at Parkers pub on the corner of Anlaby Road and Walton Street, also supported the move.

She said: “He should have a place named after him for what he did on the day."

“It was a really big thing. If the people want it, it should happen.”

Support was shown to be strong among Hull residents after lifelong City fan Simon Loughlin, 42, of Thorndale, north Hull, launched a petition calling for a public place to be named after his idol.

Within three days of it being set up on Monday, nearly 1,000 people had signed up.

The Mail has championed the petition, which Mr Loughlin states is to “honour Windass's commitment to the club and his goal at Wembley”.

Support for the striker is also strong among Internet users.

On one social-network site, nearly 2,000 people have joined a Dean Windass appreciation group.

In the description of the group, tribute is paid to the Hull-born footballer and his loyalty to the city.

It says: “Dean Windass is an absolute legend. He has graced the turf for many teams in the north of England, but his only home is on the pitch at the KC and Boothferry Park back in the day.

“Scoring goal after goal for the Tigers, he has saved us from relegation and then to top it all off he scores a screamer at Wembley to send City into the Premier League.

“This man brings smiles to Hull City and football fans across the land.”

Hull City Council leader Carl Minns has said that although it is not normally council policy to name streets or public places after people who are still alive it is not “impossible” that one could be named after Deano.

The Mail is asking all fans who would like to see a Hull location dedicated to Windass to put their name to the online petition.

To find it simply go to GoPetition.co.uk and serach "Deano".
